What is GATE

The GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) exam is a standardized test for measuring the aptitude of candidates for various post-graduate education programs (e.g. Master’s and Doctoral programs) in engineering and technology. It is administered jointly by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) on behalf of the National Coordination Board – GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India. The exam tests a candidate’s understanding of a specific branch of engineering and is a prerequisite for admission to post-graduate programs in engineering at many Indian institutes and universities, as well as for some jobs in the public sector.

The GATE exam is typically held once a year, usually in the month of February. The exam is conducted in an online format and consists of multiple choice questions. The exam is divided into two sessions, with a total of 65 questions to be answered in a total of 3 hours. The question paper contains questions from General Aptitude (GA) and the specific subject chosen by the candidate. The GA section is common for all candidates and tests the candidate’s verbal and numerical ability, while the subject-specific section tests the candidate’s knowledge of the chosen engineering branch.

The exam scores are used for admissions to post-graduate programs in engineering and technology at various Indian institutes and universities, as well as for recruitment to various public sector jobs that require a high level of technical expertise. Additionally, many private sector companies also use GATE scores as a means of assessing the technical aptitude of candidates for engineering positions. The GATE exam is considered to be one of the most prestigious and competitive exams in India, with a large number of candidates competing for a limited number of seats and job openings.
