SSC Scientific Assistant IMD 2026 Exam Pattern

The examination is conducted in two papers: Paper-I and Paper-II, both through Computer-Based Examination (CBE).

Paper-I

For Scientific Assistant in IMD, Paper-I contains:

SectionQuestionsMarks
General Intelligence & Reasoning5050
General Awareness5050
Branch Paper100100
Total200200

The duration is 2 hours. Candidates eligible for a scribe receive the applicable extended duration specified in the notification.

Paper-II

Paper-II contains the selected technical subject.

For a CS/IT candidate:

SectionQuestionsMarks
Branch Paper100300
Total100300

The duration is 2 hours, with the applicable extended duration for eligible candidates.

Is Paper-I Qualifying?

Yes. Paper-I is qualifying in nature.

Candidates who meet the required qualifying criteria in Paper-I are shortlisted for Paper-II. The notification also states that normalized Paper-I marks are used for shortlisting, while normalized Paper-II scores are used for determining final merit.

Therefore, CS/IT students should not completely ignore General Intelligence & Reasoning and General Awareness, even though the technical subject carries substantial weight.

Negative Marking

Both papers consist of objective-type multiple-choice questions.

The notification specifies:

  • Paper-I: 0.25 marks deducted for each incorrect answer
  • Paper-II: 1 mark deducted for each incorrect answer

The questions are set in Hindi and English.

A CS/IT student can divide preparation into three broad groups.

Group 1: Core CS subjects

Start with:

  • Data Structures
  • Algorithms
  • Operating Systems
  • DBMS
  • Computer Networks
  • Computer Organization

These subjects form a large part of the technical syllabus.

Group 2: Theoretical subjects

Then cover:

  • Digital Logic
  • Theory of Computation
  • Compiler Design
  • Engineering Mathematics

These subjects require concept-based preparation and regular problem solving.

Group 3: General Sections

Along with technical preparation, keep practicing:

  • General Intelligence & Reasoning
  • General Awareness

These two sections are compulsory in Paper-I.

Important Point for CS/IT Students

Candidates applying for Scientific Assistant in IMD must choose their subject according to their eligible educational stream. Once the subject/stream is selected in the application, the notification states that it cannot be changed.
